Large Speaking Area

photo: Marek Kruszewski

This sound installation was developed especially for the staircase of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in its entire architectural extension.

Eller uses texts as source material, which he has taken from the captions of the picture gallery and transformed into speech and sounds. The museum's messages are rendered in the voices of two speakers who enter into a dialog with the space and the passers-by walking through it. As a counterpoint to the exuberant sound of speech, two speaker sculptures - designed as bronze castings - comment on the absence of speaking and commenting, as a silent presence without dialog. The museum appears in the performance as a living, timeless place of encounter that has been productive for centuries.
